Nurturing Talents In Music And Art

More secondary options to create greater excellence in art and music

Creative digital imaging and computer 3D animation, anyone? If these options thrill your tweens, then head to St. Andrew’s Secondary School. The school, which has a strong Art and Design culture, is one of the two schools selected by the Minisitry of Education (MOE) for its new initiative, a new Enhanced Art Programme (EAP).

By complementing traditional approaches of learning art with experiential learning such as animation, it aims to equip talented students with the right aptitude, creativity and technical skills. The school, which is a Centre of Excellence for Design for south zone schools, will receive start-up fund from MOE and one additional art teacher to help realise its dream of providing more opportunities to art students to develop their talent.

Another school selected for the EAP is CHIJ Katong Convent, which has developed a holistic framework to provide greater art exposure and enrich its art education.

At the music scene, Chung Cheng High School (Main) is coming up with music projects to develop students’ skills in research and presentation. The school, which has a rich tradition and culture for the arts, has been selected based on the quality of the school’s existing Elective Music Programme and its capacity to implement and sustain  a strong music programme.

The EAP and EMP are two-year programmes that provide an enriched learning environment for Secondary 3 and 4 students, who will proceed to either take the Art or Higher Art, Music or Higher Music at O-level.

Art Elective Programmes (AEP)

To extend the reach of AEP,  Bukit Panjang Government High School will offer the AEP, bringing the total number of schools offering AEP to 8. The AEP is a four-year programme,  introduced at Secondary 1,  to provide students who are academically capable and artistically talented, an opportunity for in-depth study of the subject.

Bukit Panjang Government High School progressively builds students’ interests and achievements in Art by having a broad-based Art programme at the lower secondary level and a more contemporary and digital media programme at the upper secondary levels. The school, which boasts several achievements, including the Sustained Achievement Award (Aesthetics), good results in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival(SYF) Art & Crafts Exhibitions and the School Digital and Media Awards, offers a wide range of enrichment activities that extend beyond the classroom.
