WHAT ABOUT EYE LEVEL
Eye Level prides itself in catering the very best for its students. It provides classrooms with a Self-Directed Learning environment to enhance every student's own learning.
What is Self-Directed Learning?
'Self-Directed Learning' does not refer to 'Self-Study'.
With Self-Directed Learning, students would develop a clear goal, stay motivated, and proactively get involved in learning. They take ownership over their learning outcomes.
At Eye Level, you have a platform specially designed for its students to develop such constructive learning traits by creating a conducive environment. The ingredients essential for developing a Self-Directed Learner include the following:
* Learner-oriented Programmes (Eye Level Programmes)
* Mentoring / Coaching (Eye Level Instructors)
Why is Self-Directed Learning important?
Research shows that the 3-times Rule applies to mastery of new knowledge. That is, it requires 3 times the time and effort to internalise information learnt compared to what it takes for initial learning.
For example, violinists practice over 10,000 hours to be able to perform on a competitive level.
The same can be said with learning. Without practice, it is hard to expect good results. Self-Directed Learning (SDL) allows students to practise as well as reinforce their skills and memory through frequent encounters with what has been learned. The diagram below shows how short-term memory can be changed to long-term memory through the SDL process:
We all know that practice makes perfect. Plus, children need a undisrupted time on their own – to think about what they have learned and to internalise it.
The SDL process can make this happen.
Eye Level Class Flow and Self-Directed Learning
Eye Level Programmes are different from other enrichment programmes as it individualises every programme for each Eye Level student. Furthermore, it inculcates critical thinking skills as well as Self-Directed Learning (SDL) skills.
While younger Eye Level students learn in classroom environment, which has an island-styled layout, they will progress to its SDL desks when they are ready.
Eye Level Class Flow
When students attend the Eye Level Learning Centres, they first get a 1:1 coaching from its Instructors.
Then, they attempt the booklets at the SDL desks, and return to the Instructor should there be any questions.
Towards the end of the session, a review of the booklets will be conducted with the student, together with homework allocation.
Therefore in every classroom, there would be students from different levels. The entire session would take around 40 to 50 minutes.
This methodology encourages your child to be independent and motivates him/her to study. This lifeskill is an important skill that would come in handy when he/she progresses to higher levels and beyond.
